Our view on safety
We want to help you live a better everyday life at home. We believe a better life is a safer life – safer for you and your family, and the wider environment. We draw on over 75 years’ experience of everyday life at home to make sure we create products that are as safe as possible. This is our commitment to you. It’s in our DNA.
We know life at home
We believe the home should be the safest place in the world – safe so that you are free to explore your world. We use all our experience to help you achieve this. Over 75 years of product development has taught us about what works and what doesn’t. When we create a product, we consider your safety through the whole process – from raw materials to finished design.
Everyday life is unexpected
Our products get used in creative ways. That’s why our product safety risk assessment considers intended – and unintended – uses of every product we sell. We ask our customers around the world how they use and experience our products. We also participate in networks – including over 100 standard committees globally – focused on product requirements and compliance. These real-life insights inform what we make next.
We perform over a million product tests every year. We have IKEA Test Labs at our home in Älmhult, Sweden and in Shanghai, China, with a combined test area of around 20,000 m2. Here, over 250 people work full-time to make sure that our products are as durable, sustainable and safe to use. We also work with independent accredited test labs around the world. We don’t just test in development, but continually through a product’s whole lifetime. This helps us understand how they perform over time in everyday life at home.
Our own standards
For every market, there are relevant laws and standards that all products must meet. That’s the benchmark, but we like to do even more. We have our own standards, which are often tougher than the regulatory ones. We aim to have one of the most rigorous approaches to product testing for home furnishings in the world. From its raw materials to its design and its durability, you can trust that we have put all our knowledge of a better life at home into every product you buy. And when we see a need, we act to make improvements.
Making our products better
Our standards apply before a product reaches you, and afterwards. For example, our bed linen contains no toxic or allergenic dyestuffs, toxic solvents, formaldehyde or APEO. We believe that’s how all bed linen should be. If a chemical could be harmful to you or your environment, we don’t think it should be in your home. We don’t just follow legislation. When we identify potentially harmful chemicals, we act. We also recall products we think we can improve.
In 2014, we developed a circus-inspired swing, GUNGGUNG, to encourage more active play and fun at home. By working with professional acrobats, we identified ways in which we could improve the construction. After a further testing process, GUNGGUNG is relaunched in stores as an even better and safer product.
A safer life at home is about continuous improvement. We can always improve things. We can always learn something new. Our commitment to you is that we constantly strive to make our products as safe as possible for you, your family and your environment.
