We love veggies and it seems our customers do to – successful plant-based hot dog tests pave the way for launch in August 2018.

The new IKEA veggie hot dog is not only tasty but also good for both people and the planet. During a test period in the IKEA Malmö store more than 90% of those who tried it liked it and would recommend it to others. Adding the veggie hot dog to the food offer is contributing to IKEA Food’s goal to include more plant-based ingredients in the range and offer delicious, healthier and more sustainable food at affordable prices.

At IKEA want to inspire people to a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle with food that has a positive impact on both people and the planet. However there is no point in creating a healthier and more sustainable food if it is not tasty. That is why we worked closely with our suppliers; testing and tasting and tasting and testing developing the final recipe for the veggie hot dog, and we are proud to present what we hope will become a new IKEA icon. The new plant-based hot dog is made from delicious veggies with visible chunks of vegetables such as kale, red lentils and carrots. Served in a bun with a swirl of spicy mustard and heaps of tangy red cabbage on top and finished off with sprinkled extra crunchy fried onions.

“We are really proud of this product as we have managed to combine great taste, sustainability and a low price. We want the more sustainable offer to be available for the many, not matter the size of the wallet. We got so much positive feedback from people who tried it, it’s been a really motivating journey over the past weeks.” says Michael La Cour Managing Director, IKEA Food Services AB.

The iconic hot dog has a long history within IKEA. In the 1980’s Ingvar Kamprad set the price of the IKEA hotdog at 5 Swedish Krona – which was half price compared to competitors in Sweden at that that time. It was the beginning of the success story of the IKEA hot dog that today is served at IKEA all over the world. By introducing the veggie hot dog to the IKEA Bistro, we want to stay true to Ingvar Kamprad’s vision and offer a quick, convenient and truly affordable product for all IKEA visitors to enjoy. The veggie hot dog will be available at all IKEA stores in Europe from August 2018 and in all stores in 2019.
