Designing for circularity and our future
IKEA has embarked on a transformation journey to become a circular business by 2030. In the world of finite resources, we have recognized the need to change our approach to how and where we meet our customers, how and what products and services we develop, how we source materials and develop the IKEA supply chain. We are adapting our existing business model to enable the prolongation of product and material life, by enabling the four circular loops of reuse, refurbishment, remanufacturing, and recycling.
One of the key enablers of circularity for IKEA is to design all products with circular capabilities from the beginning. Our products will always live up to the five dimensions of the foundation of democratic design, bringing good design to the many people by providing well-designed home furnishing solutions, with great form and function, high quality, built with a focus on sustainability, and at an affordable price. We will now also embed circular capabilities into every product, setting the preconditions for all products to live multiple lives as they move through the circular loops.
In 2017, we created our first designing for circularity guide, defining how circular design can enable IKEA products to be reused, refurbished, remanufactured, and recycled, and what demands it placed on our product design process. Recently, we have made important updates, based on the understanding that some aspects of circularity will apply to all products, and others will be important based on product type and intended use.
We are committed to designing all products with circular capabilities by 2030. The Circular Product Design Guide is our guide to navigating through the process of designing these circular products. We are optimistic about IKEAs future and the impact we will make on how we use our planet’s resources, and how we can enable more sustainable choices for our customers.
